Texas A&M University Academy of Distinguished Former Students

Richard S. Ruiz, M.D., has been selected by the Texas A&M University College of Science for its highest alumni honor, induction into the college's Academy of Distinguished Former Students. Dr. Ruiz, class of 1954, has been recognized for his achievements and contributions to his profession, community and causes as part of the college's Recognition and Awards Dinner.

The Academy was established in 1996 to recognize Aggies who have brought honor to their alma mater and professions through outstanding leadership in mathematics, statistics, the sciences and medicine. Ruiz joins a prestigious list of 38 previous honorees distinguished for their merit and innovative achievements.

Richard S. Ruiz, MD, Provides expertise and experience in most areas of ophthalmology. His clinical interest includes medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous with special interest in age-related macular degeneration and ocular melanoma. Other surgical interest includes retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy. Because of the maturity of his practice, he has developed a special interest in evaluation and surgical treatment of cataracts.

Dr. Ruiz was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston from 1971 to 2008, and holds the John S. Dunn Distinguished University Chair, the first such endowment in the entire University of Texas System. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science was named after Dr. Ruiz by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System in March 2009.

Dr. Ruiz has held academic appointments at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He has been a visiting professor at numerous universities across the nation, and has published more than 200 articles in professional journals.
