With the "graying of America" there is much concern about macular degeneration and its effects on vision. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of legal blindness (20/200 or less) among people 50 years of age and older in the western world. Treatments for AMD are rapidly advancing. At the Cizik Eye Clinic two anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) drugs are showing great promise and improvement of vision beyond expectations in many cases of the wetform of AMD. VEGF is a protein that causes abnormal blood vessels to grow, bleed and damage the center of the retina (macula) resulting in loss of central vision. This interferes with driving, reading and other everyday tasks. VEGF-blocking drugs, like Lucentis and Avastin, can actually stop, and even reverse the growth of these abnormal blood vessels, resulting in dramatic improvement.
