Services
Comprehensive Low Vision Evaluation:
This is an assessment of your functional vision and is very different from a routine eye exam. A detailed questionnaire regarding the various functional difficulties you experience is first collected by our trained staff. If you have specific hobbies that you are having difficulties with, you are encouraged to bring it with you to the evaluation.
A comprehensive assessment of how you use your vision along with a detailed map of your usable vision is developed utilizing the latest technology. This enables us to determine the most appropriate devices, strategies and environmental adaptations to help you. Depending on your level of impairment and vision loss, you are then referred to our center’s Occupational therapist for further training on the use of your residual vision.
We also provide visual skills assessment for driving with a bioptic telescope.
Vision rehabilitation training
with the Occupational Therapist:
A detailed report based on your low vision exam is provided to our Occupational therapist who conducts an occupational therapy evaluation to assess your level of functioning and establish goals. A tailored treatment plan is devised based on your individual needs.
Occupational therapy sessions can be provided right at the convenience of your home. You may be asked to come to the clinic for some therapy sessions based on your needs and diagnosis or if you live outside the Houston area. Your training may involve learning effective use of your residual vision utilizing a variety of tools, low vision devices as determined by the exam, strategies and environmental adaptations. Our therapist also provides work place assessment and living environment assessment to address safety and adaptations.
If you are receiving other occupational therapy or home health services, please let our staff know at the time of exam so we can work with them to avoid any disruption of your other therapies.
Vision Rehabilitation training for Stroke
and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):
About 1/3 of individuals with a stroke suffer some form of visual field loss. This can cause difficulty with reading, writing, walking, driving, and bumping into objects and people. If you have had a stroke or TBI and are experiencing difficulties with any of these activities, vision rehabilitation may be able to help you regain some of your independence. Our center is involved in research for coming up with successful strategies for vision rehabilitation following stroke. To learn more about stroke, vision loss, and therapy,
