The Preservation Of Sight and the visual Presence of Art: A Unique Combination.
There is no better place to show works of art than a place dedicated to the preservation of sight.
Dr. Ruiz has long been aware of the benefits of art for staff and patients. He is especially interested in having art that can be enjoyed by visually impaired individuals. Abstract paintings, with large areas of bright colors, often enable those with visual problems to perceive the color and general design of the work. In accordance with this idea, the different treatment areas of the Robert Cizik Eye Clinic are color-coded into red, yellow, green, and blue sections. Much of the artwork was placed in accordance with this color scheme. Large canvases of vibrantly colored, abstract themes create a pleasant, cheerful atmosphere throughout the clinic.
Most of the art that is displayed in the new Cizik Eye Clinic was acquired for the Hermann Eye Center between the years of 1977 and 1979. When Ben Dubose, one the best known local art dealers, died of eye cancer, two of his favorite local artists, David Adickes and Herb Mears, donated paintings to Hermann Eye Center in his memory. Since those first donations, works of many other artists have been added to the collection including those of Dixon Bennett, Lamar Briggs, Tony Bass, David Hickman, Peggy Oxford, Oris Robertson, and Alvaro Herran. Many of these were also donated by artists, patients and patrons.
The art collection shows wonderfully well in the Cizik Eye Center, thanks to Jeffrey McMillian, collections consultant, whose skillful placement has accentuated the architectural design and achieved a beautiful gallery like appearance. According to Mr. McMillian, the reason that the art presents so well is due to the abundance of natural light and open 'View corridors" afforded by the interior design which allow the work
to show to its best advantage. The effect is striking; patients who for years have taken a keen interest in the collection now ask about the "new art".
The Cizik Eye Clinic collection affords a unique opportunity for both patients and staff to daily enjoy beautiful color and design that many would not have otherwise.
